FAQs

What is Sunless Tanning and how does it work?

Tanning using tanning beds or the sun occurs when the skin produces pigment to protect itself from UV rays. With Sunless Tanning, the tanning solution is applied by a trained technician using a High Volume, Low Pressure (HVLP) system. The tanning solution contains an active ingredient called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that reacts with the outer layer of your skin. This produces the bronzing effect. The maximum generation of color is reached within 8-10 hours, so the color will continue to darken after the initial application.

How long should my Sunless Tan last?

Your tan will last 5-10 days or longer depending on your ability to follow a proper skin prep and moisturizing regiment. A sunless tan fades like a tan from the sun because your skin has a natural exfoliation process of every 10 days. Proper hydration is the key to maximum longevity of your tan.

What should I wear to my Sunless Tanning session?

Whatever you feel comfortable wearing! Ladies have the option of wearing just panties, bra and panties, bathing suit, tank top and shorts, or tanning nude. Our boutique caters to women only - sorry, men! If you choose to be tanned in a bathing suit, we suggest you buy one specifically for use while Sunless Tanning or use an older one . During the tanning process there is always a chance that some of the solution may get on whatever you are wearing. Any color that is sprayed on the material or rubs off from your skin can be washed out during a normal wash cycle.

Is Sunless Tanning safe?

Yes! DHA has been FDA approved for use in the personal care industry for years. No adverse side effects have been reported other than minor skin irritations or minor allergic reactions. Allergic reactions are extremely rare and can usually be eliminated by showering.

What should I do to prepare for my Sunless Tanning session?

Shower the night prior or the morning of your Sunless Tanning session.  Shave. Exfoliate your entire body using a non-oil based exfoliant. This will rid the skin of dead cells. Do not wear lotion, make-up or perfume. Lotions and make-up may act as a barrier to prevent the tanning solution from reaching and interacting with the skin and it can affect the absorption of DHA - resulting in streaking and minimal color. Do not wear deodorant. If the sunless tanning solution comes in contact with deodorant, it may result in green rings around the armpit and is difficult to remove. Wear loose, dark clothing and open-toed sandals. Wearing tight clothing can rub the tan completely off in some areas. We recommend waiting at least 4 hours before wearing tight clothing. Waxing, pedicures and facials should be done at least one day prior to your Sunless Tanning session.

What should I do after my sunless tan is applied?

Avoid perspiring and be careful washing your hands and other activities  that involve water, as this may cause your tan to streak until your first shower. Shower 8-10 hours after your Sunless Tanning session. Ideally, the DHA in our solution needs about 10 hours to reach its peak. When showering, use your hand instead of a washcloth. Also, use a body wash or shower gel. These products contain less alkaline than regular bar soap. Apply an alcohol free moisturizer the morning and evening after your first post-tan shower. Moisturize daily thereafter. Hydrated skin is essential in maintaining a long lasting tan because it slows the process of natural skin exfoliation. Taking long hot baths or soaking in the pool can accelerate the exfoliation process and fade your tan. When swimming or soaking in a hot tub, use a waterproof sunscreen to help seal your Sunless Tan in.

How long does the Sunless Tanning Application take?

A typical full-body session takes about 10 minutes and an additional 5 to 10 minutes should be allowed for drying time prior to getting dressed. Partial body services take proportionately less time.
